Printable kit · iPhone & Windows 11

Do it yourself, with the steps written down.

Plain Steps is a printable kit of one-page task cards for your iPhone and your Windows 11 computer — bigger text, lost downloads, printing, settings that changed by accident, and scam checks. Keep it beside your device: look it up, follow the numbered steps, check it worked.

Sound familiar?

Everyday technology keeps changing, and nobody remembers every step. That’s not a failing — it’s why the steps should be written down.

Someone showed you how once — but the steps didn’t stick.

The screen went huge, gray or sideways, and you don’t know what you pressed.

S01the 6-question check

How a card works

One task. One page. The same shape every time.

Every card follows the same signposts, so after one or two you know exactly where to look.

  1. 1

    The path

Where the setting lives, one stop at a time — so you can find your way even if your screen looks a little different.

  2. 2

    Numbered steps

Do one, look at your screen, do the next. Words in bold are exactly what you’ll see.

  3. 3

    A drawing, not a screenshot

Simplified so the one thing you need stands out — and clearly labeled as an illustration.

  4. 4

    Done when

How to tell it worked. Many cards also show how to change it back.

  5. 5

    Stop here if…

When to stop and get trusted help instead of pressing on.

Look inside

Real pages, not mock-ups.

These are pages from the kit exactly as you’ll receive them. Select one to read it full size — or download 10 free sample pages.

Free in the sample

Before you tap: the 6-question Scam Check.

Based on the FTC’s four signs of a scam, with guidance from Apple, Microsoft and Google. It’s in the free sample pages, and on a desk card you can keep by the phone.

Any “yes”? Stop. Don’t click, call back, pay or share anything. Contact the company yourself, on a number you already trust.
  1. Did it come out of the blue?
  2. Is there a problem — or a prize?
  3. Are you being rushed?
  4. Does it ask you to pay in a particular way?
  5. Does it ask for a code, password or personal details?
  6. Does it want you to click, call or install something?

  4. Read, download, print

Open the PDFs in your browser or download them. Print what you need — here’s how.

Straight answers

Checked, dated and honest about its limits.

Checked against the source

Every step was checked against Apple’s and Microsoft’s own support pages on October 8, 2026 — against their official instructions, not on every model of phone and computer. The full list of sources is public.

Drawings, not screenshots

The pictures are simplified illustrations, labeled as such, using the exact words on your screen.

Independent

Plain Steps isn’t made by, endorsed by or affiliated with Apple or Microsoft. No testimonials or ratings are shown here, because we haven’t collected any yet.

What it won’t do

It doesn’t cover Android, iPad, Mac or Chromebook, and it can’t recover accounts or repair devices — for those, it shows you the official route.

Questions

I’m not good with technology. Is this too advanced?

It’s written for exactly that. Each card is one task, in plain words, with numbered steps and a way to check it worked. You don’t read it front to back — you look up what’s in front of you. Try the free sample pages first if you’d like to be sure.

Do I need a printer?

No. The PDFs read well on a computer, tablet or phone, and you can search them for a word like “print” or “bigger”. Many people print just the desk cards and the pages they use most. Black-and-white printing works fine.

Which paper size should I use?

You get both. US Letter is for the US and Canada; A4 is for most other countries. Your printer’s paper is usually the one sold where you live.

What if my screen looks different from the card?

Apple and Microsoft update their software several times a year. Each card names the software it was checked against, uses the exact words on your screen, and its path shows where to look nearby. If we correct or refresh this edition, the updated files appear on the same Gumroad page your receipt links to — at no extra cost.

Are the pictures screenshots?

No — they’re simplified drawings that point at the one thing you need, and each is labeled as an illustration. Real screens change color and layout with updates; the words the cards use are taken from Apple’s and Microsoft’s own instructions.

How do I get my files after paying?

Gumroad emails you a receipt with a View content button. It opens a page with the PDFs — read them in your browser or download them. You don’t need to create an account. See Getting started for step-by-step help.

I can’t find the email.

Check your spam or promotions folder for a receipt from Gumroad. You can also create a free account at gumroad.com/library with the same email address you used to buy — your purchase appears there.

I’m buying this for a parent or friend. What helps most?

Print the desk cards and the Scam Check and leave them by their phone and computer. Fill in the “My devices” and “My trusted helpers” pages together. The help note gives them a simple way to tell you exactly what happened, and the practice rounds let them try each task with the card, then on their own.

Can I share it with my family?

Yes, within your household: print copies for the people you live with and help. Please don’t post the files online or pass them around beyond that.

What if it isn’t right for me?

If the kit isn’t right for you, ask for a refund within 30 days of purchase — just reply to your Gumroad receipt email. You don’t need to give a reason or return anything.

Who is behind Plain Steps?

Plain Steps is an independent guide — not made by, endorsed by or affiliated with Apple or Microsoft. Every step was checked against their own support pages; the full list of sources is here. For questions about your purchase, reply to your Gumroad receipt email.
